Building Homes with Habitat for Humanity

Millions of people—from families with small children to elderly couples on a fixed incomplete in houses that are overcrowded, unhealthy, even dangerous. People living in these conditions struggle to achieve even the most basic needs: food, water, safety and rest. When survival needs go unmet, families cannot turn their attention to higher needs such as education, emotional health, career and healthy relationships. Living in substandard conditions yields a constant mix of despair, stress and a preoccupation with “getting by.”

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity are joining together in an unprecedented alliance that will put the faith of Lutherans and their communities into action to help families in need move into the economic mainstream and put an end to poverty housing.

Lutherans from 65 county churches will come together to build a home this summer on Allen Lane in Dover. At this time, volunteers are being recruited for everything from pounding nails to registering volunteers on site. Volunteers need to be 16 or older and do not need to be Lutheran. The build will begin in mid-June and conclude in mid-September. To volunteer, contact Kathie Wild, Volunteer Coordinator with York Habitat for Humanity at 717-854-6168 or email kathie@yorkhabitat.org.

US Muslim Peace & Unity Event

US Muslims Convene in Pennsylvania to Promote Peace & Unity — Several thousand US Muslims will gather at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center on June 20th through 22nd for a three day Annual Convention to promote peace and unity. The 60th Annual Convention is sponsored by the USA Chapter of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC), who actively spread the message of “Love for All, Hatred for None.”

The AMC spans over 180 countries and has a worldwide membership exceeding tens of millions. It was founded in 1889 by his Holiness, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, who claimed to be the spiritual second advent of the Messiah and the promised Reformer awaited by the Muslims. His message was to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. He unequivocally condemned violence and terrorism in any form and for any reason and emphatically declared that an aggressive “jihad by the sword has no place in Islam”.

The AMC holds the distinction of being the foremost Islamic organization with a central spiritual leader. This year’s Convention is of particular importance, as it falls on the Community’s 100th anniversary of Khilafat (the spiritual institution of successorship to prophethood). The Community’s fifth and current spiritual leader, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, resides in the United Kingdom. Through this central leadership, the AMC maintains a track record of moderation, tolerance and unity across the globe.

A highlight to the three day weekend gathering at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center is a special welcoming and interactive session for guests and dignitaries on Saturday (June 21st) from 3:30 to 6:00 PM. It is open to the public and all are welcome.

Car Wash Fund Raiser

Cheerleaders from Northeastern Senior High School will hold a benefit car wash on June 29 from 11 AM until 3 PM at the parking lot of McDonalds Restaurant , 4245 North George Street Extended in Manchester. Proceeds from the car wash will benefit the York Haven-Shelley Park Inter-Community Renovations Fund.

Shelley Park is located on Cassel Road in the southern part of Newberry Township. Buck and Kate Shelley donated the 36 acre parcel in 1992. Shelley Park is adjacent to the York Haven Elementary School and the Borough of York Haven. The park originally had 3 baseball fields, a multi-use soccer field, a concession stand, a storage facility and a ½ mile bituminous walking trail. A pavilion and grill are also available. With the receipt of a PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources matching fund grant in 2005, the Township has added a tot lot. The tot lot houses slides, climbing equipment, swings, including an ADA accessible swing, and spring toys. Another new addition in 2005 was a regulation basketball court. Approximately 1/3 of the park is open woodland and offers an exceptional area to picnic, cross-country ski and sled ride. Eagle Scout Troop members, Brad and Travis Peters and Justin Shellenberger, provided the pavilion and benches, trash can liners and a new nature trail.Plans are underway for the addition of picnic pavilions, a youth playground, a volleyball court and a skateboard park.
